Just as "the tone makes the music" the attitude you set before beginning to meditate decides how well you will meditate. Think about this: what is the purpose that you set in mind before beginning to mediate. We live in "goal driven" cultures, but goals are often of the ego, so meditating driven by goals set by the ego to get beyond the ego does not seem very productive. Mystic philosopher Alan Watts stated:
“When we dance, the journey itself is the point, as when we play music the playing itself is the point. And exactly the same thing is true in meditation. Meditation is the discovery that the point of life is always arrived at in the immediate moment.”
